You don't win Condé Nast Traveler's 2008 Reader's Choice Award for "Best Mexican Resort" without putting together an impressive package. This high-priced jewel in the swanky Riviera Maya is an all-villa resort that is jungle-posh, eco-friendly, über-sexy, and remote enough to be a lost paradise.

The Tides lies just outside the charming village of Xcalacoco, seven miles north of Playa del Carmen on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It's also 40 miles south of Cancun,

Beach Expert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • Hidden by thick plants and trees, the 30 villas are extremely private. Each is protected with a palapa roof and has a private outdoor pool.
  • As quiet as the Tides may seem, no more than a call initiates a quick and thorough response. Just ask your personal butler—at your fingertips in less than a moment's notice.
  • "Charge it to my room" is a completely acceptable way to pay, especially for a romantic dinner on the beach.
The Tides Riviera Maya (formerly Ikal del Mar) is arguably Riviera Maya's most luxurious and exclusive resort. The hotel's well-regarded spa has a wide array of enticing massages and natural treatments. The beach here is the only disappointment—too rocky and narrow for comfortable swimming or sunbathing. Most guests do their relaxing at the hotel's private pools or at the small raised pool near the seashore. For honeymooning and romantic getaways, it's hard to do much better.
