The sum is a chic neo-colonial lodge that is extravagantly luxurious yet eminently welcoming.

Connected by boardwalks, the seven stone-wall, thatched-roof suites are outfitted with canopy beds, enormous claw-foot soaker tubs, plunge pools, and outdoor showers. Lisa Goosen hand-picked the décor herself, perhaps leaving you with a plush easy chair, an antique telescope, or a fine Persian rug to accent your stay. For families, there is also a two-suite Presidential unit and the three-bedroom Manor House, which are located separately on the reserve. Come evening, guests arrive in their rooms after dinner to discover a roaring fire, a different treat every night—chocolates one evening, toffee the next—a crystal decanter of cognac, and, in the winter, a hot-water bottle warming the bed.

In the spirit of exclusivity, Tintswalo is situated in an ancient sycamore grove next to a seasonal waterway on a private reserve that is contiguous with South Africa's greater Kruger National Park. In other words, guests get all the wildlife Kruger has to offer without the crowds of gaping picture snappers. In fact, they might spot plenty of creatures right from their chalets' floor-to-ceiling windows: Baboons, elephants, and even leopards with newly born cubs have been known to frequent the lodge, drink from the plunge pools, and, as is the case with monkeys, snatch laundry.

Local Shangaan guides know the 58,750-acre reserve intimately and can pinpoint game, from rhinos to the elusive leopards, as well as elucidate the finer points of Shangaan legends and lore.

The icing on the cake is, quite literally, that; Tintswalo's chef, Ryan McFarlane, makes an extra effort to craft inventive fare from local veggies and game like ostrich, kudu, and springbok. A wine cellar holds dozens of vintages of South African wine and French champagne. The food isn't the only fun involved with dining, either: You might have a candlelit dinner in the wine cellar, a mid-morning brunch laid out on carpets in the bush, or a luncheon feast set up in a dry riverbed.
