But you will find biking trails, an archery range, waterskiing on a huge lake, tennis courts, an arts-and-crafts center, and swimming pools on the property's 165 action-packed acres. It's summer camp for all ages at this family-run and family-owned retreat, which has been welcoming guests since 1933. The Tyler Place's history is quite fascinating. In the 1800s, families pitched tents lakeside for economical summer vacations. In 1884, the current owners' grandparents met as ten-year-olds in a scenic spot near the resort's Shipyard Bay that the family has dubbed "Lover's Lane."

Outside of a couple of three- and five-night stays around Memorial Day Weekend, when the resort opens annually, all vacations are on a weeklong Saturday-to-Saturday schedule. (Shorter visits may be available at the last minute through the summer season, but they not guaranteed.) This means all guests are arriving on the same day, so it'll be easier for your kiddos to make friends with same-age "campers" during their age-appropriate morning and evening programming. (Yes, you read that right, Mom and Dad: You score free time to spend together each day just after breakfast; kid-free dinners, too!) Afternoons are for family time—whether that's jumping on water trampolines, tackling the climbing wall, or shrieking across zip lines together. Not feeling so energetic? Family naps are a perfectly acceptable activity here.

The Tyler Place not only caters to kids (infants to teens have their own special activities and spaces), but it really looks out for parents, too. Every single type of accommodation—whether it's a suite in the historic inn or Carriage House, or a private clapboard cottage—features a private parent's bedroom. Late-night entertainment for grown-ups includes karaoke nights, old-fashioned charades, and dancing to local jazz musicians... and you're always welcome to hop in the lake for a moonlit swim.
