Home to the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, Belize has long been popular with scuba divers who head to the island of Ambergris Cay to float among the manta rays, turtles, dolphins, and sharks. As of late, however, travelers are heading inland to hike in a rainforest full of parrots and butterflies, visit rarely seen Mayan ruins, and canoe along the Macal River. Mick and Lucy Fleming opened this eco-resort in Belize long before green was the magic word. They have grown over the past 27 years to include two dozen deluxe bungalows with thatched roofs, a more affordable mobile tent set-up with screened A-frames and communal bathrooms, and a spa that features massages and facials. Located in Belize's inland Cayo District, the eco-friendly Lodge at Chaa Creek, is part of a private 365acre nature reserve in the hills above the Macal River, about 20 minutes from the town of San Ignacio. Whether staying in one of the 23 thatchedroof cottages or one of the ten peakedroof casitas (bungalows) at the facility's Macal River Camp, you wake up to the sounds of the rainforest: the nottoodistant cries of howler monkeys, the chattering of birds, and the crescendo of cicadas. All the accommodations, even the modestlypriced camping casitas, come with decks, where kids watch for toucans, parrots, and spider monkeys. The cottages come with Mexican tiled floors and private bathrooms.
