Even with the latest $500 million overhaul of Vail and Lionshead villages, many of Vail's hotels still lack defining features, trending more modern-industrial than renovated Victorian. Not the Sonnenalp. Inspired by Ofterschwang, Bavaria, home of the hotel's founders, the Faessler family, this luxurious hotel looks more suited to the Alps than to Colorado's snow-choked I-70 corridor. Pitched overhanging roofs, scrolled balconies, and flower boxes give the exterior its signature look, while

The aptly named Sonnenalp ("sun on the mountains") Hotel radiates warmth. Owned and run by the Faessler family, whose ranch in Bavaria served as inspiration, the hotel is in the heart of Vail village, a four-minute walk from the ski lifts. After a day on the slopes, guests can unwind by the fire in the library, at the full-service spa or by the heated indoor-outdoor pool. Summertime options include golf at the resort's private eighteen-hole course. The KidVentures program provides youngsters with supervised activities and dinner, while grown-ups can choose among five restaurants, including the Swiss Chalet and the contemporary-American Ludwig's. Guest accommodations have custom furnishings, fireplaces, flat-screen televisions, complimentary Wi-Fi and spacious bathrooms with heated floors.

The Bavarian-style lodge with 115 suites and 12 hotel rooms practically defines Vail, offreing something for everyone. Families will appreciate the choice at four great restaurants, large bathrooms, 30-inch HDTV in most rooms, and winter and summer sporting options. Better still, Sonnenalp's KidVentures offers a full range of summer and winter programs, as well nighttime trampolining and laser tag (aka, parents' cue to make romantic dinner plans).
