The monkeys and sloths hanging out in this verdant tropical forest are onto something: warm, hilltop breezes and sweeping views of the cobalt Caribbean amidst 250 acres of virtually undisturbed rainforest in which to frolic. The only things better about being a guest in Samasati's treehouse-like bungalows are the (human) creature comforts—warm, wood- and window-lined rooms and inviting hammocks on spacious verandas overlooking clouded-capped jungle.

Walking trails unfurl throughout Samasati Biological Reserve, which surrounds the resort, where oversized orchids, iridescent butterflies, sleek frogs, and radiant toucans await. The retreat is also a great launch pad for combing the nearby white-sand beaches of Cahuita National Park and kayaking or surfing the Caribbean swell.

Samasati's commitment to keeping its stunning surroundings pristine was made official when it was awarded the Costa Rican government's "Certificate for Sustainable Tourism" in October 2007.
