Peaks of Otter Lodge offers 63 nearly identical guestrooms in a series of three attractive two-story buildings. A matching end building houses the registration desk, gift shop, dining room, and three handicap-accessible rooms. The lodge is situated on a grassy hillside beside scenic Abbott Lake, and all the rooms provide an excellent view of this small but pretty body of water. Peaks of Otter Lodge is about 25 miles north of Roanoke, Virginia, and is the farthest north of four lodging

  • Surrounded by miles of trails, fall hiking here is a must. However, also consider visiting in early June when the area's Catawba rhododendron and mountain laurel come into full bloom.
  • Ride the 63-mile Peaks of Otter Challenge, which starts easily enough near Troutville, Virginia, passing through rolling Allegheny farmland before rising sharply to ascend the Blue Ridge at Bearwallow Gap. After all that pain, though, the downhill ride home is a blast!
Located at milepost 86, Peaks of Otter is one of the Parkway's more accessible lodging choices, especially given its relative proximity to major metropolitan areas around Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia. It does get busy around the good-weather months and especially during prime leaf-peeping season. In fact, reservations are accepted in October for the following year's foliage season, so you may want to shoot for quieter periods in winter and early spring. Accommodations here are
