The pace of life in the West African bush matches the rate of a dugout canoe plying the lazy waters of the Mandina River, whose banks are lined with mile after mile of mangroves. White egrets and giant herons hunting fish hover heavily over this idyllic branch of the Gambia River. Mongooses romp around in small pools, monkeys dig for crabs on sandbanks, and monitor lizards warm themselves by the river's edge.

Mandina River Lodge sits right here, in the midst of 1,000-acre Makasutu

Mandina River Lodge is set amongst a tropical garden in a hidden corner of Makasutu Culture Forest. This private lodge is exclusive to the guests that are staying, a number that will not exceed 12 people.

Mandina has been uniquely tailored for the sophisticated adventurer, looking for a first-class eco retreat. Four solar powered floating lodges and one stilted house are nestled into the privacy of the encompassing mangroves. Reached by elevated walkways or by dug out canoe –- paddled by your own 'man Friday'. The lodges offer 180-degree views of the Mandina Bolong (an idyllic tributary off the main river Gambia). Each handcrafted wood lodge features a four-poster carved bed fitted with crisp white linens. The en-suite eco friendly bathroom with tiled shower, state of the art composting toilets and solar heated water, opens on to the mangroves for a truly unique bathing experience. Fall asleep to the rhythmic sounds of the bush and awake to the distant call of the Muezzin from the neighbouring Kembujeh village.

Recently voted 'Best New eco Hotel In The World' by the Sunday Times newspaper (UK), Mandina is setting new standards in luxury environmental accommodation, without sacrificing quality that you would expect from any small luxury hotel the world over.

Dine at the alfresco restaurant on your own choice of menu; set each day after a personal talk with the chef.
