Do your kids love animals? Then book your Riviera Maya all-inclusive family vacation at Iberostar Tucan, where you could easily while away an entire afternoon with the kiddos just spotting wildlife on the 28-acre property. The Iberostar's grounds include a jungle-like area filled with lush tropical plants, palm trees, and fernsand which is also home to a crazy amount of colorful birds, lizards, monkeys, and agoutis (rodents that look a bit like big guinea pigs, called tzereques in Mexico). Also on property: peacocks, flamingos, koi, turtles, and swans.
The Iberostar Tucan shares its grounds with its sister resort, Iberostar Quetzal. Each has its own lobby and 350 rooms (324 standard rooms and 26 ocean-view suites) in three-story buildings that flank a large free-form pool. The only significant difference in the two resorts is the décor. Tucan is Maya inspired, while Quetzal offers a more traditional Mexican Colonial feel. Truly, there's no reason to book one property over the other, unless you'd prefer a blue and yellow room (Tucan) over a blue, orange, and gold room (Quetzal).
Both resorts share the free-form "lake pool," plus a children's wading pool (one-foot deep), an adult pool, and a rectangular pool for such activities as scuba instruction and water polo. Young children gather at Lucy's Club, an open-air building where kids do arts and crafts and play games; tweens and teens tend to join resort activities organized by the entertainment staff, such as volleyball, beach soccer, and poolside bingo. A small playground for young children is also on the grounds, plus there's a game room with Ping-Pong and pool tables.
Iberostar Tucan and neighboring Iberostar Quetzal are in a gated resort development called Playacar. While Playacar has its own little faux-village shopping center, it's only about a 30-minute walk to Playa del Carmen; by taxi, it's five minutes to the city's bustling 5th Avenue.(-) Close
