When the Four Seasons took over the management of the former Lodge at Koele (and the Manele Bay Resort, for that matter) in 2006, things started looking up, up, up. Not that they were down, but $50 million in capital improvements and staff retraining has a way of putting the shine back on a platinum band.

Let's be clear, though: Lanai is no Maui. It's a tiny island with only three places to stay and a plantation economy until recently. (Now it's a tourist economy, such as it is.)

Beach Expert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • Of the two Four Season hotels, this is the one that in many ways is representative of Lanai's history and culture. It exudes an upcountry casual elegance, and service, naturally, is impeccable.
  • The Lodge has both a stable and a sporting clays and archery range on the grounds (shooting lessons available), and nearly continuous shuttles to the beach and bay for snorkeling and charters, and to the sister hotel, Four Seasons Manele Bay.
  • Ask about surfing lessons. You'll take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to a secluded beach to learn surfing and see some of Lanai's untamed backcountry in the process.
