Bryce Canyon Lodge offers several types of accommodations in one of America's most scenic national parks. The lodging complex sits near the park's colorful badlands, which are highlighted by the well-known hoodoos that seem to stand guard over this rugged landscape. Like Zion Lodge and Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Bryce Canyon facility was once owned by a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad that donated all the properties to the National Park Service in 1972.

The lodging complex consists of the rustic wood and stone lodge that opened in 1926, 15 historic multi-unit cabin buildings, and two modern motor lodge buildings. The main lodge was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the architect who designed Yosemite's Ahwahnee, Zion Lodge, and the North Rim's Grand Canyon Lodge. It houses the registration area, restaurant, gift shop, an attractive lobby, and a huge stone fireplace. A large brick porch with chairs and benches stretches across the front of the building. The only accommodations in the main lodge are three suites plus a studio. All the other guestrooms are cabins and motor lodge units. The cabins were refurbished in 2004-05 and are roomy with tiled bathrooms and gas fireplaces.

Bryce Canyon is one of our favorite national parks, in part because we always enjoy our stays at the lodge. The nights are generally crisp and the road to Rainbow Point offers some of our country's most outstanding and unusual landscapes. The cliffs and hoodoos are only a short walk from the main lodge. One night after dinner we walked to the cliffs under a full moon. The sight of silent pink hoodoos under the glow of the moon was the highlight of our three-month summer trip to the West.
