Grand Turk is a diver's island for two reasons: First, it has more than two dozen world-class dive sites within a five- to ten-minute boat ride from pretty much anywhere on the island, ranging from shallow coral gardens teeming with reef fish to dizzyingly steep submarine walls frequented by mantas, eagle rays, and humpback whales (in season); second, there's really not much else to do.
And the owners of the Bohio Dive Resort have embraced their island's singular draw. As a no-nonsense dive resort, the only one of its kind on the island, its grounds and 16 rooms are clean and comfortable, but not opulent. Amenitiesincluding a swimming pool, yoga classes, and bikes for touring the seven-mile islandare practical without being indulgent. And the Guanahani Restaurant, on-site, serves food that is simple yet always fresh and delicious.
The Bohio is the only Grand Turk hotel with an on-site dive operation, making it easy to roll out of bed and into the dive boat each morning. Divers of all skill levels will find plenty to keep them occupied. Sprawling coral gardens occupy the space between the beach and the offshore wall, most with depths of around 30 feetperfect for beginning or student divers. Experienced divers can explore the vertical wall at any depth, though in many spots, the top of the wall is the most interesting. Many of Grand Turk's most popular dives sites are along this ledge, where dramatic archways and swim-through formations punctuate the reef, along with steep sand chutes that split the wall perpendicularly into mini-canyons before spilling into the abyss.
Divers who prefer to set their own schedules can take advantage of the resort's unlimited shore diving. Just grab a tank from the dive center at any time of day to wade out from the hotel's picturesque shorelinethe resort is located on Pillroy Beach, a staple on any list of the Caribbean's best beachesand make a short swim to the reefs and wall just offshore.
