Good water also means great rafting. The Clark Fork River offers everything from gentle, scenic floats to intense whitewater in the Alberton Gorge, where rafters hit 12 big rapidswith names like Fang and Boat Eateralong a 13-mile stretch of river. Landlubbers can also find their bliss in Lolo National Forest, where the Blue Mountain, Pattee Canyon, and Rattlesnake national recreation areas offer hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails leading to rolling valleys, glacial lakes, and precipitous peaks. Rock climbers can cling to granite walls at Lolo Pass where tough, technical routes like the "Heap" get the adrenaline pumping.
B&B guests may glimpse the blue spruce tinge (for which Blue Mountain was named) through the picture windows that line each comfortable, welcoming room of the inn. They can learn more about the natural and human history of area in the well-stocked library and through the family heirlooms that are displayed, many from the Missoula area. And, in the shade of ponderosa pines, they can linger by the water gardens, relive the day's thrills, and look forward to tomorrow's breakfast.
