Aruba's Amsterdam Manor is, quite simply, paradise found. Cotton-like clouds drift across endless blue skies and azure seas lap at extraordinary stretches of white sand. Hoards of vibrant tropical fish await their close-ups from snorkelers and paddlers. A thatch-roofed beachfront bar serves cocktails to sun-kissed guests, and rustling palms shade patrons aside a cool, inviting pool.

This family-owned resort combines understated Caribbean elegance with a Dutch Colonial flair that touches every impeccable suite and studio. Tile floors, white walls, dark wooden shutters, and ceiling fans combined with quiet courtyards and sweeping ocean views complete the relaxing effect.

Amsterdam Manor's whimsical design, first-rate service, and comfortable rooms make it one of Aruba's most appealing small hotels, while its prime location and reasonable prices make it one of the island's best values. The hotel looks as if it were plucked from the Dutch countryside, with a mustard-yellow exterior, peaked roofs, painted window shutters, and rows of small turrets. There's nothing medieval about the interior, though, with whitewashed walls, tile floors and modern bathrooms; some units have balconies, ocean views, and whirlpool tubs as well. All rooms have well-equipped kitchens (kitchenettes in the studios) and there's free internet access for guests. The hotel is located at the northern end of Eagle Beach, arguably Aruba's most beautiful stretch of sand and sea. You have to cross the main road to get there, but it's a minor inconvenience--the hotel still has chairs, umbrellas, and food service on the beach--and helps keep the Amsterdam's prices reasonable. Service is friendly and prompt, befitting the hotel's unassuming charm.
