The Wild Ride Official Contest Rules

No purchase or payment necessary to enter or win.

1. How to Enter: On any day, from 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) on March 12, 2003, through 11:59 p.m. ET on April 9, 2003, visit Away.com and submit your entry at www.away.com/wildrides. Only one entry per person, per household. All entries must be received by Away.com by 11:59 p.m. ET on April 9, 2003. Away.com, Inc., Volkswagen of America, Inc., The California Division of Tourism, and California Travel and Tourism Commission ("Sponsors") reserve the right to change any contest date by posting notice at www.away.com.

2. Eligibility: The Contest is open only to United States residents. All contest entrants must be 21 years of age or older to enter and to be eligible to win. Entrant must have a valid driver's license and be insured to operate an automobile in the United States. Entrant must propose a traveling companion who must be at 21 years of age or older, have a valid driver's license, and be insured to operate an automobile in the United States. Entrant and entrant's traveling companion must be available to travel between April 25, 2003, and May 7, 2003. Void where prohibited. Employees and directors of Sponsors and all of their parent, affiliated, and subsidiary companies; their advertising and promotional agencies; and the immediate family members (spouse, parents, siblings, and children, regardless of where they live) or members of their same households (whether related or not) of such employees and directors are not eligible.

3. Selection of Winner and Notification: Entries will be evaluated based on creativity, ability and commitment to complete the trip, promotional abilities, adherence to contest requirements, information learned by Sponsors in connection with any finalist round activities (described in greater detail below), and information that may be learned by Sponsors independent from that provided by each entrant. A single Winner will be selected from all eligible entries. Ultimate selection of the Winner is in the sole discretion of Sponsors. Sponsors may select two or more finalists before selecting the Winner and may require that each finalist and the finalist's proposed traveling companion provide additional information (including by responding to written questions or by participating in a telephone or in-person interview), and that each finalist and each finalist's proposed traveling companion execute an Affidavit of Eligibility, Indemnification, and Liability and Publicity Release, described in further detail below. Winner will be notified by e-mail or phone within 24 hours after selection. Winner and Winner's traveling companion, if they have not done so already, will be required to execute the Affidavit of Eligibility, Indemnification, and Liability and Publicity Release within 48 hours of notification to Winner of his or her selection as the Winner. Winner and Winner's companion must travel together at all times. If the selected Winner or Winner's traveling companion fails to comply with any contest requirement, Sponsors reserve the right to select an alternate Winner.

4. Prize and Obligations of Winner: Winner will be awarded - and be obligated to take, with a companion - a driving trip in California beginning on April 27, 2003, and ending on May 6, 2003 The tentative trip itinerary is available at www.away.com/wildrides. Sponsors reserve the right in their sole discretion to change the itinerary at any time - even after Winner and Winner's companion have started the trip -- and Winner and Winner's companion agree to complete the trip as changed by Sponsors. Sponsors will provide the following:

a.   Round-trip, coach class air travel and airport transfers for Winner and Winner's companion from the airport closest to Winner's United States residence to San Diego, California, and from Sacramento, California, to the airport closest to Winner's United States residence.

b.   An automobile to be used only on the trip and to be returned to Sponsors by Winner upon completion of the trip. Winner and Winner's companion are responsible for driving the automobile on the trip and agree to operate the automobile in accordance with all applicable state and local laws and agrees to operate the vehicle in a safe and prudent manner at all times. Winner and Winner's companion guarantee that they will not operate the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances. Winner and Winner's companion agree to sign a Vehicle Loan Agreement at start of trip and abide by the rules therein.

c.   Lodging for each night of the trip in a single room (double occupancy) at the establishments listed on the trip itinerary.

d.   Up to $200 per day to be used to cover all food, drink, and incidental expenses such as gas, tolls, parking, souvenirs, and gratuities for both Winner and Winner's companion.

e.   Activities selected by Sponsors. These activities will range from highly physical activities (such as rock climbing, skiing, surfing) to less strenuous activities (such as yoga and biking). Sponsors may change the activities without advance notice to the entrants or even during the trip without advance notice to the Winner.

f.   Electronic equipment (such as a digital camera, laptop computer, video camera, and/or cell phone) provided at the sole discretion of Sponsors and for use only during the trip only and in connection with activities authorized by the Sponsors. These items must be returned to Sponsors in the same condition as these items were loaned to Winner at the conclusion of the trip.

Approximate value of the trip is $10,000.

Winner and Winner's companion agree to complete the trip and to participate in all activities set forth on the trip itinerary, unless doing so would pose a health or safety hazard to Winner or Winner's companion. If participating in any aspect of the trip (including the activities) would pose a health or safety hazard to Winner or Winner's companion, Winner and Winner's companion agree to notify Sponsors as soon as they become aware of such health or safety hazard. Winner and Winner's companion also agree to allow Away.com to use their likenesses in future promotions for this and other contests, sweepstakes, or giveaways. Winner agrees to remain in contact with Away.com for the duration of the trip via phone and email. Winner and Winner's companion agrees to document the trip in writing and photographs, which become the property of Sponsors. Winner and Winner's companion agree to participate in scheduled activities and to stay on schedule. Winner and Winner's companion also agree to be available to speak with media for publicity during trip. All photos and writings, both submitted in entry form and during trip, become the property of Sponsors and may be used by Sponsors in their sole discretion without further compensation to Winner or Winner's companion in the future.

5. General Terms & Conditions: No cash or other credit will be given if the Winner is not able to take the trip. Prize is not transferable. Winner and Winner's companion will be solely responsible for all other expenses not specifically set forth herein including but not limited to taxes, gratuities, souvenirs, and any other incidentals. No cash redemptions or substitutions permitted, except by Sponsors, who may substitute a prize of equal or greater value if the featured prize becomes unavailable. Federal, state or local taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the Winner. Entrant agrees that if selected as Winner, he or she and his or her companion will execute an Affidavit of Eligibility, Indemnification, and Liability and Publicity Release releasing Sponsors and their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and the employees, officers and directors of all such entities ("Releasees"), from all liability with respect to acceptance, possession or use of the prize awarded, indemnifying Releasees from and against any claims, causes of actions, or damages asserted against Releasees related to, or in connection with, Winner's and Winner's companion's acceptance of the prize or the actions of Winner or Winner's companion on or in connection with the trip (including, but not limited to, claims for property damage or personal injury), and consenting to the use of their names and likenesses for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation. All Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations apply. Sponsors reserve the right to extend the contest,the date for selecting and notifying the Winner, or the date for the trip. Sponsors assume no responsibility for computer system, hardware, software, or program malfunctions or for other errors, failures, or delays in computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature. If for any reason the contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other cause beyond the control of Sponsors that corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this contest, Sponsors reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the contest or to select the single prize Winner from among the entries received prior to the suspension or termination of the program; and Sponsors further reserve the right to disqualify any individual who tampers with or in any way corrupts the entry process.

CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
