What to do in Polihale State Park

Polihale State Park encompasses nearly 140 acres of coastal lands in western Kaua'i, at the western end of the Na Pali coast. The park consists of a large sand beach, Polihale cliff and a traditional heiau. This is a typically hot and arid, almost desert-like setting.

Natural and cultural sites within the park make this a great place for watching sunsets and viewing scenery. A wide sand beach backed by tall dunes comprises the camping area of the park. Further north Polihale Cliff with a traditional heiau forms the boundary of the park. Facilities at the park include campsites, picnic tables and pavilion and restrooms.

The camping area at Polihale can accommodate up to 60 people. A camping permit must be obtained through the Kaua'i District of Hawai'i State Parks: 3060 Eiwa St., #306, Lihu'e, HI 96766. Phone: (808) 274-3444. The permit serves as your campsite reservation.

Recreation
Recreation opportunities at this site include exploring, camping, picnicking, sunbathing, shore fishing, viewing scenery and photography. Swimming at this site is not recommended as strong currents make the water treacherous.

Location
Polihale State Park lies on the northwestern coast of Kaua'i at the western edge of the Na Pali. It is accessible from the end of Kaumuali'i Highway by following a dirt road for five miles north.

Climate
The climate on Kauai varies more with the terrain than the seasons. Generally, the coastal temperature changes little throughout the year with an annual average of 74 degrees F. The higher elevations of the interior of the island includes the wettest place on earth, Mt. Waialeale. This region averages higher than 4,000 feet and receives nearly 500 inches of rain. If your planning to camp in the higher elevations of Kauai, I recommend layers and rain gear. Temperatures drop four degrees F with every 1,000 feet gained in elevation.
