Great Camping in Central Florida

Cypress Glen Campground

Set in a mixed forest of pines and hardwoods, the campground slopes toward Silver Lake, where there's a small beach and a far-off view of the interstate bridge. Sites are generously spaced, and the forest creates lush shade. The hiking trails begin at Silver Lake Campground down the road; bicycles are allowed on forest roads. Just north of the Silver Lake area are two canoe rental concessions: Nobleton Boat and Canoe Rental, (352) 796-7176, and Canoe Outpost, (352) 796-4343. Anglers regularly catch all kinds of bass, panfish, and catfish in the river.

How To Get There

The park is located in the Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, Silver Lake Recreation Complex. From Interstate 75, take Exit 61 eastbound on State Road 50 for three-quarters of a mile. Turn north at the traffic light; the highway is marked as Croom Rital Road on the north side and Kettering Road on the south side, but follow the signs for the Withlacoochee State Trail for approximately 3.5 miles. Just before the interstate overpass, turn east into the Silver Lake complex. This is the second campground on your left, about four-fifths of a mile from the turn.

Campsites, facilities: The largest of the three campgrounds in this state forest complex, Cypress Glen has 43 sites with piped water, but no electricity. Rest rooms, showers, picnic tables, grills, and fire rings are provided. Children are welcome. Pets are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: No reservations, but there is a nightly site charge that covers up to five people. Pick a site and the ranger will collect the fee in the evening or the early morning. Up to five people, using two tents or one RV, are permitted per site. Credit cards are not accepted. This campground is open only on weekends and holidays (from Friday at 10 a.m. through Monday at 2 p.m.).
