Snaking through the Green Mountains between Ball Mountain Dam and Townshend Reservoir, Vermont’s West River offers a mix of forestland, farmland, and several miles of charging Class III-IV within Jamaica Gorge. A popular spot for whitewater kayaking, this is one of the region's more dependable rivers on account of scheduled releases from Ball Mountain Dam. Given its proximity to Stratton Mountain, a four-season resort, the West is an easy daylong adventure for vacationing families. Naturally, fall is the prime time to raft the West, so you can enjoy some quintessential New England leaf-peeping between bouts of feverish paddling.
