Do It Yourself: A Safari Destination Guide

South Africa

Hluhluwe Game Reserve
In the heart of Zululand lies the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, home of the famous white rhino and the shy, deer-like nyala. Along with these creatures you will also find buffaloes, elephants, antelope, and other species. The large herds of elephant favor the dense forests around the reserve. Located just southeast of Swaziland, Hluluwe has seven eco-systems ranging from mountain bushveld to wetlands. The best time to visit Hluhluwe is in early fall, when the game has congregated but worst heat has passed.

Kruger National Park
One of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa, Kruger National Park is hailed for the abundance and diversity of its game. Bush walks and game drives provide excellent opportunities to view the "big five": lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant. The Park's numerous eco-systems also harbor a wide variety of smaller species. In and adjacent to Kruger are several private, richly populated game reserves, including Londolozi, Singita, and Ngala. If you are visiting during South Africa's summer (December through March), expect thunderstorms.
