Across Isle Royale by Foot
Isle Royale can be visited by either seaplane or boat. The vast majority of visitors arrive on a scheduled ferry. Because of increased demand during July and August, it is recommended that reservations be made in advance.
Choice 1: Houghton, Michigan, to Rock Harbor via the Park Service's boat, Ranger III.
The Ranger III leaves Houghton at 9:00 AM and arrives at Rock Harbor at 3:30 PM The boat docks overnight and returns to Houghton the next morning. The Ranger III runs from early June to early September. For information and reservations contact:

Choice 2: Copper Harbor, Michigan, to Rock Harbor via the Isle Royale Queen.
The Queen operates on two schedules. From mid-May to mid-June, it departs Copper Harbor at 8:00 AM Monday-Friday. The trip takes about four and a half hours. The boat departs Rock Harbor the same day at 2:00 PM for the return to Copper Harbor. From mid-June to the first week of September, the Queen operates Monday through Saturday, leaving Copper Harbor at 8:00 AM and departing from Rock Harbor the same day at 3:30 PM From mid-September on, the Queen reverts to its earlier operating schedule. Choice 3: Grand Portage, Minnesota, to Windigo and Rock Harbor via the Wenonah.
The Wenonah offers daily service from Grand Portage, leaving at 9:30 AM and returning from Windigo at 3:30 PM the same day. Call (715) 392-2100 for details.

There are 36 campgrounds, available on a first-come, first-served basis, scattered throughout the island. seventeen of the campgrounds facilitate group camping. Campsites bordering the shore of Lake Superior have three-sided shelters available. Besides camping, the only accommodations available on the island are at Rock Harbor Lodge. The lodge is open from mid-June to mid-September and offers rooms, kitchenettes, and a restaurant. Reservations can be made by calling (906) 337-4993.
