Hiking Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Lane Camp Loop
Gorp.com

Go where most Basin hikers don't — exploring the interesting rock formations and sweeping views of the northeastern ridges, then sampling the moist redwood valleys before looping back.

From headquarters, follow Skyline-to-the-Sea north through giant redwoods and cross Opal Creek, marveling its otherworldly opalescence during sunny days. Continue north, then climb east for about a mile to Basin trail. Head northwest to Lane Camp crossing huge veins of rock that dive off-trail into the valley. Lane has six well-spaced sites under massive Douglas fir.

Start early on the remaining 15 miles of this loop, heading southwest on Hollow Tree trail, continuing along Johansen road, and south on Anderson Landing road. Brush by Sunset Camp to Berry Creek Falls. Climb the rigorous two-mile Howard King up 1,300 feet to Mt. McAbee and down 700 feet to headquarters.
