Off the Road Again: America's Top 4x4 Destinations
In Florida's Panhandle wilderness between the Gulf Coast and the southern edges of Alabama and Georgia, you'll find lots of good 4WD destinations in the Apalachicola and Osceola National Forests. Located near Tallahassee and Lake City, both forests contain a network of off-road trails, along with many camping and fishing spots.
Florida wildlife-management areas on the Panhandle also allow 4WD use over a network of unpaved backcountry roadsfairly rugged and often muddy tracks. You'll need a permit to hunt in the game preserves, which are operated by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission ( Tallahassee, FL 904. 488.4676). Permits are available from local hunting and fishing shops. For Apalachicola: Apalachicola Ranger District Office (Bristol FL 850.643.2282). for Osceola: Osceola Ranger District (Olustee, FL 904.752.2577).
