La Mina Trail #12 - Southern Region
Gorp.com

La Mina Fall, one of the most popular waterfalls in the rain forest, is reached via this trail. The lush vegetation and exuberant palm trees combine with the cascades and pools of La Mina making this trail one of the most scenic in the area.

As you wind down the trail you will come across several series of narrow concrete steps and picnic shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930's. Originally these picnic shelters with stone fireplaces were used as honeymoon cottages. At the end of the trail you will arrive at La Mina Fall, a beautiful waterfall that drops over 35 feet. Visitors often stop and cool themselves under the cold running water. From this point you can access the Big Tree Interpretive Trail, and the Rio de la Mina Trail.

This is not a loop trail therefore you will have to double back to the parking lot. If you choose to continue onto Big Tree Trail you will exit at PR 191, Km. 10.2 approximately 1.0 mile from Palo Colorado Information Center. You will then have to walk uphill on the road back to the parking lot.

Length: 1.0 mile -- Trail begins at 630 meters above sea level (2,047 feet) and ends at 500 meters above sea level (1,625 feet) in La Mina Fall.
Directions: The trailhead is located at Palo Colorado Visitor Information Center on PR 191, Km. 11.9 on the east side of the road.
Trail Information: This is a paved trail. Although it is not a difficult trail it is a steep climb back to the parking lot from La Mina Fall. Good physical condition and proper footwear are recommended.
Difficulty Level: Moderate. Return is difficult.
Use: Heavily used.
Hiking Time: 1 to 1 1/2 hour round trip.
Preparations: Rainshowers occur frequently, therefore trails are often wet and slippery. Hiking boots with sturdy soles are recommended as well as lightweight raingear. Bring plenty of water.
