WITHIN THE LIMITS: Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area
Why We Love It:

Situated across from the city in Boston Harbor, this rec area boasts 34 islands that offer respite from Beantown's urban clamor. Park visitors can enjoy boating, camping, and lazing on beaches within sight of historic downtown.

Don't Miss:
Get a little culture and check out the Civil War-era fort or climb a lighthouse to see stunning vistas of Boston.

Getting There:
Passenger ferries running several times daily connect downtown Boston to the islands.

The Fine Print:
The islands are open 9:00 a.m. until dusk in summer and on an abbreviated schedule spring and fall. The park charges no entrance fee, but passenger ferries are $10 round-trip. For more information visit: www.nps.gov/boha or call 617.223.8666.

NEARBY: Mount Greylock Reservation
Why We Love It:

Mount Greylock Reservation in Massachusetts is home to New England's section of the Appalachian Trail and the state's highest peak, its namesake 3,491-foot Mount Greylock. The park also features 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, including several that'll get you to Massachusetts' pinnacle.

Don't Miss:
The reservation has 45 campsites, five of which are remote trailside shelters.

Getting There:
Mount Greylock is 141 miles east of Boston. Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to US-20 W, and then follow US-7 to the park.

The Fine Print:
Entrance to the park is free, and campsite reservations are recommended. For more information visit www.mass.gov/dcr or call 413.499.4262.
