Zion's near-vertical canyon walls make for epic multi-pitch rock climbing, as evidenced by this climber—scarcely visible on the red-rock face (lower left)—as he navigates up a narrow fissure in the rock.

The Virgin River has carved a spectacular 16-mile-long gorge in the upper reaches of Zion National Park known as The Narrows. When the water level is low (typically mid-summer through fall), it's one of the park's most popular and stunning hikes.

During the fall, water on the trail typically tops out at around chest height, though most of the route hovers around mid-thigh. And the water is quite cold. Freak rainstorms can cause flash flooding—always check with the ranger's station (who also rent waterproof suits for the less prepared).

Another of the park's well-traveled and famous routes, Angel's Landing is reached via a series of switchbacks that wind up to the ledge of the canyon...

To aid day hikers, a line of chain has been bolted into the rock face for the final stretch of the 1,488-foot vertical ascent to Angel's Landing from the trailhead.

The perch at Angel's Landing—the landing pad, if you will—sits at 5,785 feet, boasting staggering panoramic views of the park and the precipitous ledge one has just traversed to reach it.

Those wary of heights, however, can easily sate themselves with the simple autumnal beauty of Zion's canyon floor.
