Calling Bryce a canyon is something of a misnomer: it's more a series of dramatic, naturally-formed amphitheaters formed by weather and water erosion. Spires or 'hoodoos' of pink, gray, and white sandstone and deep, sloping canyons form the park's spectacular maze.

While visitation is highest June through September, many visitors arrive when the first heavy snowfall blankets the canyon. Rangers guide hikes through the winter wonderland every weekend (these icy trails call for sturdy snowshoes), as a backdrop of snow-tipped canyons sets the scene for some unbelievable cross-country skiing.

Navajo Loop Trail leads to Thor's Hammer, one of the most extraordinary hoodoos in the park. This standalone, blush-colored spire marks the end of a short, scenic hike.

The 'Alligator,' east of Bryce Point, is a gator-shaped butte of white dolomite. For the best views, take the 5.5-mile Peekaboo Loop Trail, which passes a series of natural peepholes in thin rock walls.

Rounding one mile and about an hour and a half, the park's famous rim walks are great tours for day trippers. Rangers will spill the canyon's secrets and point out indigenous plants and animals as they guide you down the edge of Bryce Amphitheater.

Aspen, ponderosa pine, and fir-spruce forest crowns the plateau's rim, providing a safe haven for peregrine falcon, pronghorn deer, and Uinta chipmunks. To see the most wildlife and escape the tour bus crowds, consider a multi-day backpacking trip into the heart of the canyon by traversing Below-the-Rim Trail.

Nevada, Arizona, and Utah—Bryce Canyon boasts a panoramic view of all three, with some 200 miles of visibility. At night, the shimmering sky lights up the entire park. It's a stargazer's paradise.
