More than 100,000 visitors trek to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park each year to gawk at its colossal cliffs. Solid climbers have their pick of routes, but Painted Wall is a perennial favorite. Beyond the canyons are miles of nature trails, roiling rapids, and waterfront campsites.

Gunnison Point boasts utterly incredible views, and thus makes for a popular first stop after dropping in at the Visitors Center, just minutes away. And be sure to pack a lunch—there's a great little picnic site.

The park's rock formations are among the oldest on Earth. Thick pink and white stripes of granite and quartz wrap around Painted Wall, Black Canyon's tallest cliff.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison attracts legions of climbers--but novices should tread carefully; more than 75 percent of the park's 145 rock routes rank 5.10 or higher. Tomichi Point soars above Maiden Voyage, Comic Relief, and Escape Artist, three popular climbs.

Routes to the inner canyon are unmarked and unmaintained (watch out for poison ivy in summer). Badgers and ringtail cats prowl these trails when the sun is low.

Left unplowed in winter, scenic South Rim Drive doubles as a ski trail and path to the park's magnificent overlooks. Snowshoers will find hearty treks and unobstructed views at Oak Flat Loop and Rim Rock Trail. The latter is a steady, mile-long path along the canyon's rim, while Oak Flat proves more strenuous walk, and can get quite narrow and steep at times.

Some of the best views of the inner canyon can be seen from Exclamation Point. Take the North Vista Trail, a moderate, three-mile hike through oak brush and juniper forest along the canyon's rim.
