Australia Photos: Kangaroo Island's Remarkable Rocks

Remarkable Rocks rests on a granite outcropping overlooking the crashing ocean in 84,000-acre Flinders Chase National Park on the western edge of Kangaroo Island. The island lies 132 miles from Adelaide, off the mainland's southern coast.

At first blush, the rock formations look like a precariously balanced collection of toy blocks discarded by some disinterested giant.

In truth, the dramatic shapes of each rock have been carved out of a massive granite dome by wind, sea spray, and wind over some 500 million years.

Remarkable seems a woefully flat adjective for such a stunning geological event.

But as you approach—and then explore—the formations, the term suddenly fits. Much like a certain 'grand' canyon in the States.

The rocks are about 30 feet at its tallest, and hauntingly remeniscient of Salvador Dali's surreal imagination or the figurative sculptures of Henry Moore.

The distinctive orange hue originates from the lichen that grows on the rocks.

Prevailing winds come from the south, which is likely the leading culprit behind the specific shapes of the rocks themselves.

If you're staying on the island, make your visit to Remarkable Rocks early in the morning. You'll beat the mainland day trippers and have the formation all to yourself. By 10 o'clock, the army of ferry-shepherded tourists start arriving. Sunset naturally proffers stunning light—especially as the colors dance on the orange lichen—but expect crowds.

Its position at the tip of Sanderson Bay and Weirs Cove puts it at the brunt of South Australia's infamous weather—and also makes for precarious walking along the site. Signs mark where you should not walk; don't heed their warnings, and you could join the rank of those who've drowned while sightseeing in Australia.
