Papua New Guinea is a place where you can enjoy adventures unlike in any other country on Earth. While only 5.5 million people call Papua New Guinea home, there's more than 850 different tribes and more than 800 languages found throughout this 179,000-square-mile island nation.
How to Get There
Papua New Guinea relies heavily on air transport on account of its rugged terrain, which rises sharply from the country's coastal fringes to its cloud-flecked central highlands. Papua New Guinea has one international airport, Jacksons International Airport, which is located in Port Moresby and is serviced by direct flights from Australia, the Solomon Islands, Singapore, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. Cairns and Brisbane are accessed by both Air Niugini and Airlines PNG, while Sydney, Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Honiara, and Nadi offer direct flights on Air Niugini only. Connecting flights are available from Port Moresby to other domestic airports around the country.
Papua New Guinea lies just south of the equator and north of Australia. Beyond its mainland region, Papua New Guinea comprises a diverse collection of islands, atolls, and coral reefs scattered around its coastline. The mainland is divided by the Owen Stanley Range, a rugged central spine with peaks rising above 13,000 feet (the range tops out with Mount Wilhelm at 14,790 feet). Powerful rivers begin their journey toward the sea from these mountains; below the mountain chain, fertile coastal plains, flooded delta regions, and mangrove swamps exist alongside broad sandy beaches, sheltered bays, and dense rainforest.
Papua New Guinea's coastal regions experience a tropical climate year round. Temperatures on the coast vary from the mid 70s to mid 80s (degrees Fahrenheit). In the Highlands, temperatures can hover in the mid 60s during the day before becoming chillier in the evenings and at night. Dry season is May to November.
