Heli-Skiing: The Gear
by Ted Stedman
atomic ski boots
Atomic T:11 ($629):
Since you're heli-skiing, you've obviously made a decision to forgo fiscal conservatism due to an adrenaline addiction for the steep and deep. And for that you simply want the best stability, control, fit, and warmth available in a ballistically built ski boot. Yeah, the price of the Atomic T:11 will make some flinch, but this is no time to go frugal. The boot's three essential parts—the shell, stabilizing arch, and heel/toe interfaces—each perform specific functions tuned for extreme skiing. The offset shell allows for a more natural stance, with more weight over the big toe—key for edge control and balance. The stabilizer lets the boot flex longitudinally to eliminate the ski's underfoot dead spot, another control enhancer. The stabilizer also gets major thumbs-up because its carbon construction uses inlaid rubber for stable footing on mixed rock and ice, a great combo for out-of-bounds hiking. Cuffs can sometimes eat shins alive, but the T:11's are as comfortable as they come, with an asymmetrical fit that's soothing but supportive and responsive to your every movement. We're also warm 'n' fuzzy about the neoprene toe area and moisture-fighting liner fabrics, plus the honeycomb inlay that creates a cozy thermal barrier for toasty toes.
