Though made famous by 1940s top-secret government research and the high-tech Los Alamos National Laboratories, Los Alamos has largely left behind its “Atomic City” reputation and is a bustling outdoor-oriented community with access to a wide range of recreational activities. Recently, rock climbing has taken a toe-hold in the area.
White Rock Crags, just outside the little nearby town of White Rock, is one of the Los Alamos region’s most popular rock climbing spots. It offers many routes of varying lengths and difficulties on basalt cliffs overlooking the Rio Grande Valley. Head toward Bandelier National Monument on NM 502 and NM 4, and watch for the signs to White Rock.
Los Alamos Mountaineers is a local organization that publishes a comprehensive e-newsletter with detailed information about climbing in the area as well as links to discussion groups. The club, in existence for more than half a century, also holds monthly meetings and offers climbing classes.
A good place for information, maps, and gear is Sangre De Cristo Mountain Works, located on 328 South Guadalupe Street in Santa Fe.
