What to do in New Caledonia
Some say it's the middle of nowhere. In a way, it is. New Caledonia sits 750 miles east of Australia and over 1,000 miles north of New Zealand. An overseas department of France, New Caledonia offers the divine melding of tropical splendor and Parisian culture—you can sip a superb espresso on an idyllic stretch of beach lapped by stunningly clear turquoise seas. In addition to hundreds of coral islets, New Caledonia consists of a main island, Grand Terre; several small islands, including Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines); and the Loyalty Island group.
This is not a destination for everyone. But for those who find romance in faraway lands yet to be discovered by most tourists, and who don't need all the bells and whistles of a highly developed tourism infrastructure, New Caledonia is paradise. Around 100,000 tourists a year...
