What to do in Traverse City

There’s more to this burgeoning Michigan vacation hot-spot than the humble cherry (though, admittedly, this little fruit is impossible to avoid; the area accounts for 75 percent of the country’s tart-cherry harvest). Let’s start with the grapes produced in a region that sits on the same latitude as Bordeaux and that produces a growing line of well-regarded pinot noirs. Surrounded by farmland, forests, and the fruits of Lake Michigan, Traverse City has garnered praise in national “best-of” culinary and travel lists, with a foodie scene that draws directly from its land of plenty in northern Michigan. Join the locals for more of the good life in June during the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival, held on the grounds of a former insane asylum and featuring local wines, craft beers, and, yes, cherry pie.
