Don't come to Cancun for a quiet Caribbean getaway—this cosmopolitan vacation hotspot is all about high-octane water sports, top-tier restaurants, kitschy shopping, and pulsing nightlife strung along a stretch of sugary white-sand beach.
Currents along the unprotected eastern shore can have dangerous undertows. Pay attention to warning flags put up by the hotels: Green means all good, yellow means be cautious, red means use extreme caution, and black means "Go have a margarita. The beach is closed."
The northern beaches along Bahia de Mujeres (think Playa Langosta or Playa las Perlas) are the best places to swim, jet ski, or kayak. The windswept, eastern beaches of the Hotel Zone (Chac Mool and Playa Marlin) have the best windsurfing.
