Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) is one of those areas where kids and teens are likely to want to buy stuff. A lot of stuff. Before going, give kids a budget so you don't have to spend the day arguing.
A great family day trip from Playa is Cozumel. Head over to the island by ferry, then grab a taxi to Chankanaab State Park, where you can rent snorkel gear, see a ton of iguanas, and eat beachside.
Playa isn't only about the beach. If you're a family of golfers, make advance reservations to play at Mayakoba, just 15 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. It's the only course in Mexico to host a PGA championship.
Staying south of Playa Del Carmen in Playacar (the hotel zone)? Visitors can find gems hidden among the all-inclusive resorts, including a pair of small Mayan ruins, the Playacar Golf Club, and the Xaman Ha Aviary, home to some 200 local birds including toucans, egrets, and pelicans.

Playa del Carmen sits about 40 miles south of Cancun. It's an eclectic resort town where European influences meld with the traditional Mexican culture to create a busy, vibrant town featuring great restaurants, boutique and large hotels, and a nightlife that almost rivals that of Cancun. In addition to having its own Caribbean shoreline, the city is also central to all that the Riviera Maya offers. From Playa, it's easy to visit the only seaside Mayan ruin, Tulum archaeological site, and to take in a day at Xel-Ha or Xcaret, Riviera Maya's mega-popular eco theme parks; or you can book tours to some of the Yucatan's inviting cenotes, those mysterious and magical underground pools.
