Berkshires Hiking and Backpacking Travel Tips

  • From the hamlet of Mount Washington, take the spur trail to the Appalachian Trail. Camp at picture-pretty Sage's Ravine, cross Mount Everett, and descend down the steep, rocky Jug End, where you can reward yourself with blueberries in mid-summer.
  • The Alander Mountain Loop is a rigorous 15-mile hike that starts and ends at the Mount Washington State Park headquarters and boasts some of the most spectacular views in the Berkshires. Highlights include tri-state mountain views, rocky ridges, mountain laurel, and fall foliage.
  • The Appalachian Trail section from Goose Pond Road to Massachusetts Highway 20 measures just over five miles, and much of it is situated in a protected natural area. Scenic Upper Goose Pond offers swimming, canoeing, an overnight primitive cabin, and tent platforms.
  • A six-mile loop in October Mountain State Forest takes in the Appalachian Trail, the Finerty Pond Trail, and the Cordonier Trail as it wends through a mixed temperate woodland of the state's largest state forest, where you might spot bears and porcupines.
