Located several miles southwest of Albany, John Boyd Thacher State Park rests along of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Views of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondacks and Green Mountains are enjoyed from this park. Year-round day use amenities are offered.

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has an Olympic-sized pool, volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over twelve additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and snowmobiling.

Recreation
John Boyd Thacher State Park offers hiking and biking trails, a nature trail, picnic tables and pavilions, concession, play fields, a children's playground, recreation programs, a swimming pool and winter sports including snowmobiling, snowshoe trails and cross-country skiing.

The John Boyd Thacher State Park is located 15 miles west of Albany along SR 157.

This area has a varied climate with average January temperatures ranging from 14 to 22 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -6 degrees Celsius). Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from 36 to more than 44 inches of rain and snowmelt. A slender parcel along the eastern state line receive the heaviest precipitation.
