U.S. Family Road Trips
New York Beyond Manhattan

By Stephen Jermanok

A Capital City: Albany, New York (Corbis)

Days Six and Seven: St. Regis to New Paltz to Albany (220 Miles)
Located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about three and a half hours from the Adirondacks, New Paltz is home to the Gunks, short for Shawangunk, the name of the mountain ridge south of the Catskills and the most popular rock climbing destination in the East. On these bands of shiny white rock, pointing upwards of 300 feet, you can dangle above the steep abyss on numerous climbs, from easy to expert. Try Layback and Hawk, two of the more popular 5.5 routes in the region. To help find those jug-like handholds, take a class with Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School (914.255.3280; www.emsclimb.com/locations_new_paltz.htm).

How-To Know-How
Get the goods on what you need to climb—including what route ratings mean, what to wear, and were to go with this Rock Climbing Overview.

Spend the night in Gardiner at the popular Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp Resort (845.255.5193; www.lazyriverny.com). Canoe and fish on the Walkill River, swim at the pool, or head to one of the two playgrounds. The next morning, grab breakfast at the Mohonk Mountain House (800.772.6646; www.mohonk.com999) to gain access to their grounds and a great walk around Lake Mohonk before returning to Albany.
