ROUTE DESCRIPTION: For much of the 20th century, summer brought about a million Jews from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to vacation in the resorts of the Catskill Mountains. This loop will take you take you through Sullivan and Ulster counties, to the heart of what became known as the “Borscht Belt." While the resorts (many of which were a stone’s throw from the Neversink River) flourished until the 1960s, by the 1990s only a few remained. Some fell into ruin and were burned as insurance fraud while others were sold as ashrams or drug rehabilitation centers.
