Brussels to London: Discovering your Anglo-Saxon Roots—or Your Inner Anglophile

By Philip D. Armour

Urban Warfare: London’s venerable black cabs (PhotoDisc)

Don't worry. We know what all work and no play does to our boy Jack, so we've tempered this aggressive overland tour from Belgium's capital to most of the UK with all variety of scenic surroundings and active outings. And while we also know that drinking and driving don't mix, we'd be remiss to not allow for a little Belgian beer indulgence before heading into London and points beyond. Just chalk up the consumption of delirium tremens as a primer for UK bitter, let the kayaking prepare you for plying the Scottish lochs, and…well…the delirium from that elephant-labeled beer psych you up for the surreal mysticism of Stonehenge, while still leaving plenty of time to hike up at least one of Scotland's 284 Munros, cycle the English Lake District, and hit London's hippest galleries.

Day 1: Brussels to Hasselt (55 Miles)
Start in Brussels, and head northeast to the town of Hasselt for a taste of the pastoral Belgian countryside (and food and beer and chocolates). Scholteshof (Kermstraat, 130; +32(0).1125.0202), an elegant manor house and hotel serving gourmet cuisine, makes for a great spot to shamelessly take in all indulgences, including famed Belgian chocolate, monk-brewed beers, and homemade wines.

Day 2-3: Hasselt to London (245 Miles)
It's off to London via Calais in Normandy, France, and the Channel Tunnel, a.k.a. "The Chunnel" (www.eurotunnel.com). Pass through Antwerp and Ghent and stop along the coast in the port town of Dunkerque, famous for its miles and miles of open beach. Across the border in Calais, your car will be loaded onto the train, while you sit with the other passengers for the hour-and-fifteen-minute ride under the ocean. Safely across to Folkestone, continue on to London. (Remember: stay on the left side of the road!) Spend the night in Hampstead and Hampstead Village Guesthouse (2 Kemplay Road; +44.20.7435.8679; www.hampsteadguesthouse.com), an 1873 Victorian in North London. Hampstead is the perfect staging area for day trips into central London (by tube), where you can hit a slew of museums and galleries lining the Thames, dine on amazing London cuisine (read: Thai, Indian, Korean, Japanese, etc.), shop till you drop in boutique neighborhoods—you might even spot a whale in the Thames as Londoners did last January. Then stretch your legs before hopping in the car by running on Hampstead Heath, a wooded park with swimming lakes, walking trails, and the best view of London from Parliament Hill.
