Best Resorts & Lodges Expert Property Highlights
  • Set amid desert hues, natural foliage, and a tropical garden, the Spa at Esperanza—justly touted as the best in the country—specializes in handcrafted botanical treatments that use indigenous herbs, minerals, fruits, and flora known for their healing properties. Ingredients like ayate cactus, locally grown hibiscus, desert sage, and crushed papaya are woven into a variety of treatments, facials, body polishes, and massages. The spa's outdoor plunge pool and soaking tubs are deliciously inviting, its steam cave follows an ancient ritual, and its couple's private spa suite is a romantic treat.
  • There are other Mexican hotels that offer tequila tasting classes, but I can't think of another that offers over 100 varieties of the pure agave. Tasting sessions are held on Tuesday and Saturday evenings at El Restaurante. Sipping each proffered sample, accompanied by a homemade sangrita chaser (a mix of juice, salt, and chilies that helps curb tequila's fire), you'll learn the history of Mexico's most famous spirit and hear an explanation of the process by which it is made.
  • Esperanza calls its cuisine cocina del sol, or "cuisine of the sun," a blend of Mediterranean and Baja cooking that uses indigenous organic produce and fish. In addition to enjoying the unique flavors and dishes whipped up by executive chef Sergio Howland, you can learn from the master at cooking classes held each Saturday morning in the resort's main kitchen. All participants get an embroidered apron and a chef's toque. Of course, you also get to dine on what you've prepared with the chef.

Located on a scenic bluff along Highway 1 between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, the warm and earthy Esperanza Resort reaches right down to Mexico's glittering Sea of Cortez to offer guests an inviting and luxurious escape.

The hotel subtly blends into its natural environment. Beneath thatch roofs and amid lush gardens and landscaped grounds, plenty of open spaces, and dramatic vistas, it's a place that invites you breathe in the sea air and just relax. It's also a resort that epitomizes casual elegance and the laid-back vibe of the Baja region.

The resort's accommodations offer plenty of space to spread out, with modern, regional furnishings; magnificent views of the sea; and luxurious creature comforts. Guests can choose between one of 50 seaside casitas, six suites, or residential villas. All come with flat-screen TVs and DVD players, iPod docking stations, refrigerator, coffeemaker and mini bar, and free wireless Internet. Bathrooms feature
