Expert Review of Canopy Tower
Best Resorts & Lodges Review of Canopy Tower
- Birds, birds, and more birds! This five-level ecolodge-cum-tower offers a unique bird's-eye (pun intended) view into the jungleand sightings of a wide variety of birds, from toucans to tanagers, herons to hawks.
- Canopy Tower is so close to the Panama Canal that you can see it from the fifth-floor observation deck, which also, incidentally, allows visitors uninterrupted views of the canopy of surrounding Soberanía National Park.
- Non-birders can take wildlife hikes, cruise the Panama Canal in a boat, explore nearby Panama City, and visit a local indigenous Indian village, among other activities.
An aging former U.S. air-force radar tower in the Panama jungle might not seem like an obvious spot for a birdwatching lodge, but Panamanian banker-cum-conservationist Raúl Arias de Para considered it perfect. Turned out he was on to something: The best way to spot birds is, naturally, from their own vantage pointas in, up in the treetops. And this spot is in the midst of bird bedlam as the meeting point of migrating North American and South American species.
After Arias de Para transformed the tower into a five-level ecolodge and opened up shop in 1999, the place quickly garnered a reputation for prime birdwatching and attracted illustrious bird lovers like Martha Stewart and Prince Albert of Monaco.
Guests wake in the morning and right from their window might spot a blue cotinga, a green shrike-vireo, a giant blue iridescent butterfly, or a group or squawking monkeys. From the observation deck on the top of the tower, they can take in Soberanía
