Expected to reopen in early 2009 after a long-awaited refurbishment is the Pera Palace. This is perhaps the most famous hotel in all of Istanbul. Agatha Christie loved it and wrote sections of Murder on the Orient Express here. Tons of famous folks (bi, gay, and straight) have stayed here including Josephine Baker, Graham Greene, and Ernest Hemingway. Book now for its reopening, and check out the Web site for more information. The original hotel was very Victorian, ornate, and rather stuffy, something that seemed more at home on Vienna's Ringstrasse than in Istanbul. Although the building's Venetian-style exterior will stay the same, décor is completely redone a lot sleeker and more modern—something of a cross between a Ritz and a Four Seasons. It's a hot ticket in the city.
