Best Resorts & Lodges Expert Property Highlights
  • Nationally-known outfitter Blue Ribbon Flies takes guests for private angling adventures on the property and in the surrounding area. Known for its world-class trout fisheries, the Madison River Valley attracts serious anglers. Whether you want to cast into Madison Lake or fly-fish in shallow streams, the knowledgeable guides are quite familiar with your options and can direct you to the ideal spot to nab a picture-worthy trout.
  • Interested in sleeping under the stars without letting the hard ground give you a backache or the wild animals get you? With "Edu-camping," the Lodge at Sun Ranch understands that sleeping outdoors can bring couples closer. But they've added a twist: You'll sleep in a canvas tent mounted on a wooden deck and on a plush bed piled with downy warm covers and wool rugs underfoot. To ensure your safety, a wildlife biologist guides you to your camp, teaches you about native grizzly bears and gray wolves, and then wishes you and your partner a lovely goodnight.
  • Whether you're a beginning or advanced equestrian, you should definitely saddle up and explore Big Sky country on a well-trained horse. Ride through sage meadows and pine forests with a seasoned guide, or pair a fishing expedition with a horseback ride. Couples can sign up for a leisurely trip around the property or a daylong backcountry trek into the mountains. The lodge will even pack you an organic lunch to enjoy by a stream.

But the mourning was short-lived when it was announced that the nearby private residence of Papoose Creek's founders, Roger and Cindy Lang, was being remodeled and renovated into a lush boutique lodge.

Opened in May 2008, The Lodge at Sun Ranch is the lofty reincarnation of Papoose Creek and it shares its predecessor's luxurious feel and standards of excellence, catering to a maximum of 16 people who are looked after by at least twice as many staff. The 10,000-square-foot log cabin-style lodge is elegant without being stuffy. It includes six uniquely designed rooms, some with their own fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private decks from which to contemplate the sage-covered foothills. The aptly-named Great Room has soaring wood-beamed ceilings, a blazing stone fireplace,
