Expert Review of Four Seasons The Lodge at Koele
Best Resorts & Lodges Review of Four Seasons The Lodge at Koele
- Some visitors to Lanai just fly over for the day to play golf at The Experience at Koele or The Challenge at Manele. That ought to tell you something about the clientele and the quality of play. The former course, designed by Greg Norman and Ted Robinson, is rife with water hazards. The latter, designed by Jack Nicklaus, shows no sign of hubris despite a portentous name like The Challenge. Bill Gates was married at the signature 17th hole. Play around lava fields, archaeological sites, seriously distracting Pacific views, and kiawe trees.
- The island may be tiny but there is no shortage of things to do. Try your hand at sporting clays and archery at a top-notch facility. Take a snorkeling or diving trip aboard a sleek catamaran; or simply snorkel off Hulopoe Beach. Go horseback riding along sweeping alpine valleys and through soaring forests, or play a game or two of tennis. Rent a 4WD and go in search of Shipwreck Beach, petroglyphs, and "Garden of the Gods" (a dramatic collection of eerie rocks eroding on a windswept bluff). Assuming it's not too wet, hike the Munro Trail. Or pop into a few of the mom-and-pop shops surrounding quaint Dole Park. It doesn't get more local than the Saturday morning marketplace.
When the Four Seasons took over the management of the former Lodge at Koele (and the Manele Bay Resort, for that matter) in 2006, things started looking up, up, up. Not that they were down, but $50 million in capital improvements and staff retraining has a way of putting the shine back on a platinum band.
Let's be clear, though: Lanai is no Maui. It's a tiny island with only three places to stay and a plantation economy until recently. (Now it's a tourist economy, such as it is.) Folks know everyone by name, and service, although welcoming and humble, doesn't rise to the level of other Four Seasons properties. But, frankly, it shouldn't. This is Lanai; that's why you're here and not at Wailea or Hualalai.
Koele is an upcountry gem. It's more akin to staying in a small plantation-style hotel than anything else in the state. (Or perhaps you're in Montana?) Blending elements of an English countryside manor and rural Lanai, everything about the Lodge is elegantly
