Best Resorts & Lodges Expert Property Highlights
  • The Orchid offers plenty of dining options, but Brown's Beach House and Norio's Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar rise to the top even among the resort's neighboring competition. Brown's, with its locally grown produce and Hawaii regional cuisine, features a heady beachside location. Lit by tiki torches and with tables covered in white linens, there's no better place for seared ahi. Norio's offers arguably the west side's best and most authentic Japanese cuisine and sushi. The casually elegantly spot specializes in Japanese abalone, Maine lobster, and Atlantic flounder.
  • Unwind after a round of golf, snorkeling, or sightseeing at the deservedly award-winning Spa Without Walls, which offers a full line of indoor and outdoor spa services. Guests make good use of nine outdoor hales (thatched huts), well-known for their intimacy with a trifecta of pleasures: the sounds of nearby water, the Big Island's healing mana (power), and aromatherapy. Choose one seaside or waterfall-side. Ask for an outdoor cabana treatment room and enjoy your nurturing massage overlooking the bay, with gentle tradewinds and postcard views.
  • The Orchid's "Gathering of the Kings", a Polynesian feast of music, dance, and food is more than a luau. Held on Saturday and Tuesday evenings at the Plantation Estate, it conjures the culture and character of Tahiti, Hawaii, Samoa, and New Zealand with traditional and modern interpretations. Performers bring the spirit and history of the islands utterly alive with New Zealand fire knife dances, the haka of Samoa, and the traditional hula of Hawaii. It's a call for all peoples, not just kings, to seek unity.

Hugging the Big Island's volcanic Kohala Coast, The Fairmont Orchid offers an opportunity to be as far away from the real world—both physically and mentally—as you can allow yourself to be. To aid in that mission, the Orchid provides a healthy dose of luxury with a warm serving of hospitality.

The Orchid is a quick 20 miles north of Kona International Airport and encompasses a whopping 32 acres of lushly landscaped fantasy (an oasis amidst jet-black lava fields). Upon arrival, the lobby frames views of the pool and ocean beyond—arguably like no other Big Island resort. It's hard to remember that you'll need to check in; it's all too easy to plunk yourself down in a down armchair and forget where you just came from.

The 540-room resort, which stretches out with two long wings that extend towards the ocean, offers two basic levels of accommodation. Guestrooms and suites each have a choice of garden, ocean, or oceanfront views. The least expensive
