Parents will appreciate the separate living area for unwinding after the kids go to bed. Light sleepers might want to pack earplugs to mask some of the noise from the streets below.
It's only an hour later than at most hotels, but the Affinia's noon checkout gives families some much-appreciated breathing room to get packed up and out, or to sneak in a last morning of sightseeing.
You can't go wrong for eats in this neck of the urban jungle, but Ess-a-Bagel (Third Avenue) is good for breakfast fuel, plus there's a handy deli just around the block for essentials like cereal, milk, and juice. Seo Sushi (on 49th Street) dishes up expertly sliced sashimi and sushi, as well as kid pleasers like gyoza (fried dumplings) and karaage (deep-fried chicken).

Although rates here are pricey ($300+ per night), New York's Affinia 50 affords comfort, space, and convenience in a handy Midtown location. The hotel is located about a ten-minute walk from Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, and about 15 to 20 minutes from Central Park and kid- and teen-friendly shopping at FAO Schwarz, Manhattan's cube-encased Apple Store, and Abercrombie & Fitch on Fifth Avenue. While the Affinia's sleek lobby can feel a bit cramped and chaotic—especially during the check-in/check-out crush—the guest suites upstairs are spacious and well furnished. There's also a convenient lounge area on the second floor with sofas, big-screen TVs, games, books, water, and an all-knowing concierge. As an all-suites hotel, Affinia caters mostly to a business clientele, but its large suites do just dandy for family travelers: Living areas and kitchens provide ample room in which to relax, as well as keep costs down with in-room dining.
