Big Island Beach Travel Tips
- The Big Island has only a few classic white-sand beaches. Long-running—and still-ongoing—volcanic activity has instead graced the coast with a unique collection of rugged shores, like the jet-black sands at Punaluu Beach Park, overhung with towering coconut palms, and Papakolea Beach, where crushed olivine forms a rare green-sand beach.
- If white sands are what you crave, find them on the leeward side of the island, along the Kona and Kohala Coasts, which also boast never-ending sun and calm waters. Aptly named White Sands Beach has park facilities and beginner-friendly waves, and whether you want to go snorkeling, kayaking, or windsurfing, Anaehoomalu Bay has a great all-around watersports beach.
- Head to Hilo, where it rains more than 130 inches annually, and explore picturesque Leleiwi and Richardson Beach Parks, which sit side by side. The lava-rock coves are fed by natural spring water and stay somewhat protected from rough ocean conditions, making them good places for a swim on the windward side.
