Lanai Romance Travel Tips

  • Renting a jeep on Lanai is a must. It's THE way to get around and a lot of fun to boot. Rentals do come with restrictions—a handful of especially rugged roads may be off limits—and usually require a hefty security deposit in case you return the Jeep slathered in mud or other compromised condition (some agents have photo albums of previously offending returns should you want visual parameters). Rentals may come with an ice chest for picnicking, and some companies also rent kayaks and surfboards.
  • Accessible by foot, mountain bike, or four-wheel drive, the rustic Munro Trail provides views of deep canyons, grasslands, more pointed pines than one can count, and the sea far below. On a day when mists and clouds have retreated, leaving clear blue skies, you might see Molokai, Maui, the Big Island, and Oahu. The trail rises 1,600 feet and reaches Mount Lanaihale, highest point on the island at 3,368 feet.
  • From late December through April, humpback whales can be seen blowing and breaching just offshore. The best way to view these magnificent creatures up close is by boat on a tour with onboard naturalists, such as the Ocean Rafting with Marine Mammal Search tour offered by Trilogy Ocean Sports Lana'i.

Lanai Romance Travel Overview

By its very nature Lanai is romantic, an isle of compelling natural beauty complemented by exquisite man-made gardens and manicured lawns in the kinds of resorts that one-up even paradise. There are no stoplights, just three hotels and one tiny town improbably named Lanai City. Lanai has a mere 30 miles of paved road, but rugged dirt tracks and trails invite exploration, many of them ending in places that take the breath away. Time on Lanai is relative only to the day's activities—the moment a whale heaving itself out of the water fills your lens, the hour you return to the dock after your first offshore dive, the minutes left until the setting sun gilds rocks on which ancient Hawaiians told the stories of their lives. There is mostly no reason to wear a watch—all the better to leave non-paradise behind.Read More
