New York has one of the most famous cross-country ski trails in the east: the 40-kilometer-long Jackrabbit Trail, stretching through the scenic Sentinel Wilderness area.

The Jackrabbit Trail's first section climbs five miles to a mountain saddle, passing beaver ponds and ice cliffs along the way. From the top of the pass you can turn around and glide downhill back to the lodge that resides at the trail's beginning. Alternatively, from the top of the pass you can continue on to Lake Placid, 15 miles further down the trail. Hardy skiers can run the entire length of the Jackrabbit Trail, overnighting at one of the many country inns along the route.

Another popular day trip for intermediate skiers is the ten-mile loop to Avalanche Pass overlooking Avalanche Lake, one of the most scenic spots in the east. Expert skiers will also enjoy the trail up Mt. Marcy, which offers great telemarking on the return descent.

Practically Speaking
Planning a nordic holiday in the Adirondacks is easy with so many quality B&Bs and lodges that cater to winter sports. And all this backcountry fun doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Rooms at the lodge cost an average of $60-$70 per night, including breakfast. Nordic ski guides and ice-climbing guides for are commonly available for around $100 per person per day.
